I'm not good at this... yet
I took to mathematics more than writing at school. I often struggled to write clearly and simply. I still do.
These days I get more enjoyment from writing, and spend more time doing it.
I'm not a gifted writer, but I believe I can get better with time and practice.
When things do not come naturally to us we often steer in the opposite direction. If we want to learn and grow we have to get comfortable with being incompetent.
The concept of Growth Mindset teaches us that we can change our competencies. Dr. Carol Dweck, author of the book 'Mindset' suggests that using one word can start to shift our mindset from a fixed to a growth mindset: 'Yet'.
Try it - next time negative thoughts arise that are preventing you from taking action, just say... 'yet'.
A few months ago I had no idea how to write even basic code. Now I've started to build my entire website on txt files. It will take me longer to develop my writing, but every day I can get better.
Rather than giving in to fear and denying myself the joy I get from writing, I just acknowledge I will get better over time and that fear turns into a fun learning process for me.
Yet is powerful.
