Attention Residue

Insights:

  1. The internet and digital distractions shift our attention between things, creating an attention residue, which reduces cognitive performance on subsequent tasks.
  2. What we do before creative work impacts our performance significantly.

Decision Fatigue

Definition:

  1. Daily decisions reduce our willpower, where avoiding distractions becomes harder and harder.

References:

"The link between willpower and decision making works both ways: Decision-making depletes your willpower, and once your willpower is depleted, you're less able to make fewer decisions." - Roy Baumeister

Insights:

  1. Our willpower is limited.
  2. Each decision we make reduces our willpower.
  3. Rituals help reduce decision fatigue. Rituals are the result of decisions already made, that eliminate future decision making.
  4. When we don't have to focus on the small things, we leave room to focus on what matters.

Principles:

  1. Make a list of all decisions in the first hour of the day. Figure out how to ritualize them.
