Cognitive Load

Definition:

  1. Simultaneous engagement in tasks that deplete brain resources.

Insights:

  1. People under high cognitive load will rely on intuition to make decisions, and will be less likely to notice and correct errors that may arise.

Eudaimonia

Definition:

  1. A Greek word that literally means "having a good demon". Often translated as "happiness", but more accurate is "flourishing".

Insights:

  1. Eudaimonia is achieved by having virtuous behaviour - doing the right things for the right reasons.
  2. Aristotle identified "akrasia" or "weakness of the will" as the major obstacle to increasing eudaimonia.
  3. Eudaimonia is not happiness in the sense of a positive emotion, but it is a moral concept relating to values. Seeking a life of pleasure (wealth, power, sex) is not eudaimonic, regardless of how that person feels.
  4. Eudaimonia is about self growth and affecting the world in a positive way.

References:

  1. According to Aristotle and virtue ethics, humans should direct themselves towards virtuous behaviour as the purpose of life is to live in a eudaimonic way.

Isaac Asimov

Quote:

"Never let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right."

- Isaac Asimov

Tragedy of the Commons

Insights:

  1. We often need to take collective action to safeguard or restore a common resource. However the larger the number of individuals involved, the more incentive for each individual to cheat the system and reap the benefits without contributing.
  2. A large enough number of people become free riders, there won't be a resource to free ride on.

Jane Goodall

Insights:

  1. Jane Goodall discovered behaviour in chimpanzees that we can only describe as empathic - male chimps when attacked will run to male companions for comfort, or their mother - and hold her hand.
