Cognitive Load

Insights:

  1. Cognitive load occurs when a task that is taxing on the frontal cortex (e.g. a tough memory task) diminishes performance on a subsequent task.
  2. Multitasking increases cognitive load.
  3. Cognitive load makes people less prosocial - less charitable or helpful, or more likely to lie.

Jane Goodall

Insights:

  1. In the 1960s, Jane Goodall made the discovery that chimpanzees make tools to catch termites.
  2. After Jane Goodall's discoveries, the classical definition of culture no longer only applied to humans - most anthropologists were not happy with this revelation.

Tragedy of the Commons

References:

  1. Joshua Greene, book Moral Tribes - common grazing field with sheep, there is no incentive to cooperate and everyone free rides.

Insights:

  1. When framed in the context of morality, preventing the Tragedy of the Commons requires people in large groups not to be selfish, but often there are opposing groups of people.
