Batching

Definition: A form of time management that allows you to leverage focus and reduce distractions. To arrange in sets or groups.

Insights:

  1. It is estimated that every time we move from project to project, it takes around 15 minutes to regain focus.

Principles:

  1. Batch similar tasks.
  2. Plan the week ahead and batch time according to the projects you have.
  3. Separate creative and administrative tasks.

Growth Mindset

Insights:

  1. Mindset often derives from how we are parented or taught at school. If you were praised for getting things correct you might develop more of a fixed mindset, if efforts were praised then you might develop a growth mindset.
  2. For a growth mindset, failure doesn't mean abandoning ship, but an indication that a different approach or more effort is required.
  3. You can train a growth mindset.

Principles:

  1. Use growth mindset language: e.g. "I am not sure how to do this yet"; "I am willing to learn and ask for help".
  2. Listen to constructive criticism.

Paradox of Choice

Reference: Barry Schwartz: psychologist and author of the book The Paradox of Choice.

Jam Test: Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper - customers more likely to purchase with a choice of 6 jams vs 20+, and were much happier with the purchase.

Insights:

  1. Excess choice for consumers often leads to anxiety and reduction of purchase decisions.

Pareto Principle

Reference: Vilfredo Pareto, Italian economist in 1906 observed that 80 percent of income was received by 20 percent of the population.

Example: 80 percent of profit is generated from 20 percent of customers

Insights:

  1. In life when you prioritise what matters you will find more happiness, success and love.

Principles:

  1. Focus on the most valuable activities.
  2. Focus on strengths and expertise.

Pomodoro Technique

Insights:

  1. The Pomodoro Technique is an effective way to overcome writers block, or kickstart creativity.

Principles:

  1. Set a kitchen timer. Focus on the task at hand and nothing else.
  2. Just do it.
