Availability Heuristic

Insight:

  1. People predict the likelihood of an event based on how easily they can come up with an example.

Cortisol

Insight:

  1. Laughter can boost immunity, and lower blood pressure and cortisol.

Fundamental Attribution Error

Definition:

  1. We tend to view others' actions as reflections of their character and overlook contextual influences, whereas with ourselves we recognize that context influences our actions.

Example:

  1. When someone else's phone rings at the cinema it's because they are inconsiderate, but if my phone rings it's because I need to be able to take a call from the babysitter and others shouldn't judge.

Principle:

  1. Do not judge people too harshly, especially when meeting for the first time.

Memento Mori

Insight:

  1. Many religious and philosophic leaders think about death to have the strength to face the worst.

References:

  1. Buddha: "Of all mindfulness meditations, that on death is supreme."
  2. Medieval monks kept images of skeletons as a memento mori.
  3. 16th century artists painted hourglasses, rotten fruits, guttering candles.

Mere Exposure Effect

Definition:

  1. Repeated exposure makes you like things more.

Example:

  1. The more often you see a person, the more attractive and intelligent you will find them.

Insight:

  1. Familiarity breeds affection.
